A report by the Aspen Institute in 2016, stated that three out of four American households have at least one school-aged child participating in youth sports. Because of the commitment involved it can be difficult to balance sports and education. This week we welcomed Chauncey Franks, former player, former college football coach, and character coach for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at Texas Christian University. Also joining us was TCU Football linebacker, Garrett Wallow who talked with us about balancing sports and education and what to expect as a college athlete.

The US Department of Justice says that 160,000 students skip school every day for fear of being bullied. The Centers for Disease Control and Department of Education define the core elements of the bullying as: unwanted aggressive behavior; observed or perceived power imbalance; and repetition of behaviors or high likelihood of repetition.
Bullying has evolved over the years. Now children aren't just subjected to it on the playground and between classes but it follows them home through cell phones and social media.
In this episode we were joined by Amy Friend, Clinical Social Work/Therapist, and High School Counselor, Samiyyah Middleton.

S.M.A.R.T. goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. A Growth Mindset is one that believes ability is not set in stone and can be changed with hard work. This week we welcomed Katrina Mabry-Smith, AVID District Coordinator for Mansfield ISD. Katrina shared tips for parents to help children set and reach goals and develop a Growth Mindset.

This year my husband and I have been learning to advocate for our children to receive the services they need at school. Both boys require services and accommodations and it has been a challenge figuring out how to get them the help they need to be academically successful. More and more these days families find themselves in the same position. In this episode we explore the topic with Licensed Behavioral Therapist, Rondi Allen and Suzanne Scott who heads the Special Education department at a high school in the Dallas Fort Worth area. Both have extensive knowledge and experience working with children who have various challenges from anxiety and depression, ADHD, to Autism, and require assistance at school.
