Statistics tell us that the majority of people in the US don’t read very well and many are functionally illiterate. The impact of low literacy is not only personally limiting to the success and achievement of many Americans, but it’s also costly to our society to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars.
In this episode we heard from National Education Consultant for Scientific Learning Corporation, Cory Armes. She shared with us why some students struggle to become proficient readers and what parents can do to help.

In this digital age an informal style of writing has begun to creep into our lives. Strong writing skills are important for life and career readiness, effective communication, and academic success. These days it can be difficult to motivate our kids to get excited about writing for pleasure when competing with the latest video game or tech gadget.
In this episode I was joined by writer and AP English teacher, Michelle Agbedawu and adjunct professor and author LaQuisha Beckham. They offered tips for helping our kids develop writing skills for academic and life success.
